As in 2014 and 2015, the Classic Hits format had the biggest summer upswing compared with the start of the year, according to Nielsen. Based on the average of January-May compared to the average of June-July-August for each format (AQH share) Classic Hits made a 3% jump. This is a lower differential than other summer winners of recent years: 2012 Pop CHR 8.5%; 2013 Country 8.8%; 2014 Classic Hits 10%; 2015 Classic Hits 9.7%; 2016 Classic Rock 5.1%; and, 2017 Classic Rock 8%.
While Classic Hits won the “summer swing,” its average AQH share for the months June-August ranked fifth behind News/Talk 9.6%; AC 7.7%; Country 7.4%; and, Pop CHR 6.7%. However, all of those formats dipped when comparing summer to January-May, recording negative movement. Overall, there wasn’t as much movement across the top 10 formats compared to past years.
