Stephen Colbert did a segment on his show this past summer on illegal immigrant farm workers, and wound up attending a related United Farm Workers event that also involved House Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law Chair Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). The upshot will be his appearance before the panel Friday 9/24/10.

The individual that appeared on the July program, Arturo S. Rodriguez, President of the United Farm Workers of America, is also on the witness list, along with Phil B. Glaize, Chairman of the U.S. Apple Association and Carol M. Swain, Ph.D., a Professor at Vanderbilt University.

The Daily Caller was told that Colbert would be testifying in character, a bit of news that reportedly is not sitting well with Republicans on the subcommittee. Steve King (R-IA) is the Ranking Member.

According to DC, on the program in question Colbert had been joking with Rodriguez about immigrants taking jobs, and Rodriguez had countered that Americans do not wish to work the fields, and offered all takers to come and do the work if they want at an event called “Take Our Jobs.” Colbert volunteered, and met Lofgren, and that led to the invitation to testify.

The hearing, called “Protecting America’s Harvest,” kicks off at 9:30 eastern. The subcommittee is part of the House Judiciary Committee under John Conyers (D-MI) and Lamar Smith (R-TX).
