CommComm to look at e-ads

It’s not the ads so much as what online operators can do with the underlying information that concerns members of the Senate Commerce Committee. “Individuals and businesses are becoming increasingly dependent upon the Internet for social, entertainment, research and business activities. This has created the incentive and opportunity for companies to collect, use, and disseminate data regarding online users.

There is concern, however, that tracking individuals’ Internet activity and gathering information from online users violates their expectations of privacy. Individuals often are unaware what information is being collected about them, how it is being used and to whom it is disseminated.” Senators willo explore the current state of the industry, its methodology, particularly in regards to online behavioral advertising, and the resulting privacy issues. The hearing is scheduled for 7/9/08.

RBR/TVBR observation: This is not a matter of top–line concern for traditional media, other than the pleasure and enjoyment members of traditional media may be treated to by seeing the newer kids on the block raked over the Capitol Hill coals. However, since just about all savvy media operators are incorporating online into their business model, it makes sense to keep tabs on this issue.
