Commerce says hello to bi-bi communications meetings

A series of staff-hosted sessions is on the schedule, and it will be both bicameral and bipartisan. Leadership from both parties in both US Congress Commerce Committees will meet with stakeholders to look at key communications issues, primarily related to broadband deployment.

The sponsors of the meetings include the full leadership roster from the Senate and the House, including leadership of key communications subcommittees.

On the Senate side:

* Chairman John D. Rockefeller (D-WV) and Ranking Member Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation

* Chairman John F. Kerry (D-MA) and Ranking Member John Ensign (R-NV) of the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet

On the House side:

* Chairman Henry A. Waxman (D-CA) and Ranking Member Joe Barton (R-TX) of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce

* Chairman Rick Boucher (D-VA) and Ranking Member Cliff Stearns (R-FL of the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet

The first meeting, inked in for 6/25/10, will concern “broadband regulation and FCC authority, with a focus on protecting consumers and promoting broadband investment.”

Meetings on other related issues, including spectrum policy, will be added to the schedule going forward.
