Connectivity and Mobile Trends: Gauging American Trends

A newly released survey from Deloitte has yielded some unique insights into how U.S. households are faring as they settle into a “new reality” brought on by the pandemic.

There are several findings of interest, including key takeaways on Optimizing Devices & Connectivity.

The average U.S. household now has a total of 22 connected devices. That’s down from 25 in 2021, across 14 different types (unchanged from 2021).

What do consumers want the most out of these connected devices? It is 5G that ranks as the third most-important feature for consumers who are considering their next phone purchase, behind battery life and data storage.

The “Challenges of Digital Life” are also examined in the report. Among two key takeaways from Deloitte:

  • More than half of those surveyed are worried about the security vulnerability of their smartphones and smart home devices; 40% of users are concerned about data security on their smartwatches and fitness trackers.
  • Overall, while 24% of consumers say they’re overwhelmed by the devices and subscriptions they need to manage, this was down from 32% last year.

“Our study of consumer technology trends examines how U.S. households are adjusting their use of mobile devices, wearables, and smart home technology as pandemic restrictions begin to ease,” Deloitte notes. “With fewer people working and learning from home, the house is less crowded, and many of the acute challenges we noted in 2021 have subsided to a degree. Consumers can now be intentional about which activities to do virtually and which in-person, and they’re reporting that tech-enabled work, school, fitness, and health care—in the right measure—are making their lives better, healthier, and more fulfilling.”
