Dave FM to flip to Sports in Atlanta

CBS Radio’s AAA “Dave FM” WZGC-FM Atlanta will flip to all-sports in late September/early October, writes Rodney Ho at the Atlanta Journal Constitution. CBS Radio will also be flipping Hot AC “Play 98.7” with all-sports soon in Tampa Bay, to also be an outlet for its new CBS Sports Radio Network. Stations on the network will be localized and share content with the other stations.

The rumors began circulating heavily about a month ago. Dave FM GM Rick Caffey gathered the entire station to inform them of the news, reports AJC.

At least for the next two months or so, the on-air staff and music mix will remain at the station.

A PD has been named: Terry Foxx, most recently program director at The Fan in Pittsburgh. “Working with him will be inspiring and I’m confident you’ll also be motivated by his work ethic and energetic personality,” Caffey said in a memo to staff.

An official name hasn’t been dubbed yet for the sports station, In other markets, CBS has names such as the Hub and the Ticket.

A change of format is not a surprise. Eight-year-old Dave FM’s ratings have cratered the past year and recent signs of improvement were too modest to make a difference.
