Alpha Male: Drutz Departs KNBR For San Jose Duo

For nine years, David Drutz was a key figure in the sales department for one of the nation’s top Sports radio stations.

This was after stints at regional sports networks including Fox Sports Net and Comcast SportsNet.

Now, he’s taking on top duties for a pair of Alpha Media FMs serving the southern portion of the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose DMA.

Effective immediately, Drutz will serve as VP/GM of Alpha’s pair of FMs in San Jose — both of which are ratings monsters.

Now under Drutz’s leadership is Classic Hits KBAY, known as “94.5 Bay FM,” and Hot AC sibling KEZR-FM “Mix 106.5.” KBAY and KEZR are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in San Jose, while in San Francisco-Oakland KBAY has a 2.4 share overall — easily beating three Entercom FMs primarily serving the nation’s fourth-largest radio market in the overall ratings race.

Furthermore, KEZR has a 1.8 share in the San Francisco-Oakland ratings, according to Nielsen Audio.

Drutz comes to Alpha after serving as VP of Sales and, until an April 2013 promotion from GSM, at KNBR-AM & KTCT-AM “KNBR 1050” in San Francisco. He’d been at the stations since October 2010.

“Just the announcement of David’s transition to Alpha’s San Jose operation brought excitement and interest from advertisers and members of the media across the Bay Area,” said Alpha Media COO Larry Bastida, who took on the role in January after serving as the company’s Western Region EVP. “As anticipated, David has quickly moved to enhance the culture and our productivity.”

Drutz added that he was “incredibly excited to be part of a company as visionary as Alpha Media and lead KBAY and KEZR … It’s going to be great fun in managing these stations to even more success!”

During the 2000s, Drutz was a key sales executive at top RSNs in the San Francisco Bay Area, serving as LSM of Comcast SportsNet from November 2005-July 2009, and as Regional Sales Manager for Fox Sports Net National Sales from April 1997 until joining Comcast.

Drutz began his career as an AE at KSOL-FM in San Francisco, in 1983.
