Duopoly talk in Miami

The Miami Herald reports that Post-Newsweek Stations is on the verge of buying WTVJ-TV, which NBC Universal put up for sale in March. The rumored price is in a range of $350-400 million. Such a deal would create a duopoly with Post-Newsweek’s WPLG-TV, the ABC affiliate, while breaking up WTVJ’s current duopoly with WSCV, the market’s Telemundo outlet. With Miami’s large Hispanic population, both WSCV and Univision O&O WLTV-TV are among the market’s top four stations, while WTVJ is not, which would make the ABC-NBC pairing comply with the FCC’s local duopoly rule.
