Editor & Publisher on hold again

What may be the last issue of Editor & Publisher is in the mail. Now former employees are waiting to see if a white knight steps forward to revive the 125-year-old trade publication.

In mid-December the staff of E&P was hopeful that the “bible of the newspaper industry” would be saved from oblivion, when The Nielsen Company decided to rescind a shut-down order and keep E&P operating for one more issue as it talked with potential buyers.

“Several possible buyers have stepped forward but any firm agreement, we’re told, is at least two weeks away. There appears to be a fairly good chance that Editor & Publisher will resume but we cannot say when or in precisely what form,” Editor Greg Mitchell said in a story posted on the publication’s website on New Year’s Eve. Since then, he and other former staffers have been waiting to learn what, if anything, happens next.

Meanwhile, Reed Business Information is preparing for more divestitures. RBI previously sold Broadcasting & Cable, Multichannel News and TWICE (This Week In Consumer Electronics) to NewBay Media. An email to employees first reported by paidcontent.org that came from RBI USA CEO John Poulin advised them of advanced discussions to sell more titles, although they were not identified. He thanked employees for “stayinf focused and positive during this very difficult time.”
