EPA gets into the act

The Environmental Protection Agency used the DTV pretest in Wilmington NC to get the word out to citizens about keeping the transition as green as possible. For starters, to avoid inundating America’s garbage dumps with problematic electronic refuse all at once, it recommends extending the life of an analog set by hooking it up to a converter box, preferably one that is “Energy Star-qualified.” And if an analog set is destined for the dumpster, EPA asks instead that it be recycled, “which recovers valuable materials from the circuit boards, metal wiring, leaded glass, and plastics.” EPA says it is working with manufacturers and retailers to make recycling easier.
