Anti-health reformers take to the air
Watchdog 60 Plus Association, which claims to be looking out for senior citizens, is targeting eight House health reform supporters with a television campaign. Meanwhile, a group called the Employment Policies Institute is dropping $10M on a national campaign attacking reform. More...

RBR-TVBR observation: Democratic leaders are doing everything they can to wrap it up before year's end. That means this rich source of issue advertising cash only has limited staying power.

Radio News
SBS confines its losses to single digits
Losing 6% of consolidated net revenue in the Q3 2009 environment is practically reason to shout from the rooftops, and Hispanic specialist Spanish Broadcasting System was even able to point to a black number - a 74% gain in operating income. More...

Rucker gives a hoot about radio
Darius Rucker, onetime lead singer for group Hootie and the Blowfish and current solo act, was a big winner at the CMA awards. And he becomes the latest musician to thank radio for making it all possible. More...

RBR-TVBR observation: RIAA says airplay is becoming increasingly irrelevant and is in fact working toward making it fiscally unviable for many stations in its misguided push for the Performance Rights Act. But musicians know better.

Cable and broadcasting improve for Disney
The Media Networks division was the best performer for The Walt Disney Company in fiscal Q4, with both revenues and operating income up by double-digit percentages. The improvement was largely due to the cable networks, but results also improved for the broadcasting side. More...

John King gets Dobbs slot on CNN
CNN announced that a new weeknight political show featuring anchor and chief national correspondent John King will debut in early 2010, filing the 7:00-8:00 pm ET time slot vacated by the departure of Lou Dobbs. It's being billed as an in-depth news show in the style of King's Sunday show, "State of the Union. More...

RBR-TVBR observation: King will obviously deliver a very different type of show than Dobbs. We had many times watched CNN reporters cringe as Dobbs tried to get them to make comments which shored up his political views. But "advocacy journalism," as Jonathan Klein calls it, is a big ratings draw.

Media News
Q3 revenues fell 1% for Nielsen
There was no announcement Thursday of a sale of The Nielsen Company's media-oriented magazine group, but CFO Brian West certainly kept the door open for such a sale in his quarterly conference call. Meanwhile, the company reported that total revenues declined 1% in Q3, with the media ratings business up and the publications down - a lot. More...

RBR-TVBR observation: It's easy to see why Nielsen might decide that the Business Media segment is more trouble than it's worth.

Ten Senate flip opportunities
The Republican Party has a good chance to grab some Democratic territory back in 2010, of only because the Democrats took so much of Republican territory in 2006 and 2008. And it has some opportunities to narrow the partisan gap in the Senate. But the Democrats are not without some opportunities of their own. More...

RBR-TVBR observation: Senate races tend to bring all in-state media markets into the picture, and if they are competitive, they can attract boatloads of national money.

Ratings & Research
Small biz optimism may be tested
The Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute finds that America's small businesses, often called the backbone of America's economy, have a very positive outlook for the upcoming 12-24 months. The good news from Institute fellows is that at least technically, the recession appears to be in remission. That's great news, as is the recent announcement of 3.5% GDP growth. The not-so-great news is that the GDP surge was helped along significantly by stimulus spending, prominently including the Cash for Clunkers program. More...

Wall Street Business Report

Wal-Mart cautious, so is Wall Street
Retail giant issued cautious guidance about holiday sales, saying it is looking for sales to be flat with last year. That was not met by merrymaking on Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 94 points, or 0.9%, to 10,197. As you would expect, the downbeat news from the giant retailer was also a downer for broadcasting stocks. The RBR Radio Index was down 2.343, or 1.4%, to 163.043. The TVBR Television Index was down 3.984, or 3.5%, to 108.655. More...
