Radio comes to tentative terms with ASCAP
The RMLC and ASCAP had a lot of zeroes to deal with - 10,000 radio stations, 425,000 composers and 8,500,000 pieces of music. The two organizations have arrived at an agreement in principle that will keep money flowing to composers, and the composers' music on radio - through 2016. The deal would be retroactive to 2010.
RBR-TVBR observation: Remember Mikey? The picky eater who actually liked a certain brand of cereal, prompting his siblings to give it a try? Think of Ed Christian as being Mikey. More...

CC Radio, Cumulus pact on SweetJack, iHeartRadio (audio)
When it comes to competition in the digital space, terrestrial radio companies are finding that jointing together for critical mass is becoming the way to compete in this new frontier. Under the agreement, the 570 Cumulus stations in 120 markets will be available on the iHeartRadio platform. In return, Clear Channel Radio, 850 stations strong, will also advertise daily deals from Cumulus Media's SweetJack, the daily deals platform. Cumulus COO John Dickey told RBR-TVBR all about the decision and what is means to our industry going forward.
RBR-TVBR observation: This is a major step and will likely make the difference for a lot of other groups considering iHeartRadio for their station streams. The deal will also help Cumulus expand SweetJack to hundreds of cities and better compete with Groupon and LivingSocial on the street. More...
Alden Global Capital confirms settlement with Emmis
RBR-TVBR broke the news Monday (12/5) that Emmis Communications and CEO Jeff Smulyan had settled all litigation with Alden Global Capital. Now that's been confirmed in an SEC filing by Alden - which also told the SEC it no longer owns a single share of any Emmis stock of any type. More...
Sirius XM sees 100M satellite radio equipped cars this decade
The folks at Sirius XM gather lots of forecasts on auto sales, but CFO David Frear told the UBS 39th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference that there's quite a bit of disparity over what 2012 new car sales will be. But Frear is confident in projecting that by the end of this decade there will be over 100 million cars on the road with satellite receivers in the dash.
RBR-TVBR observation: There are a lot of cars on the road with inactive satellite radio receivers. More...
Radio adds 1.4 million listeners in 2011
As Arbitron readies its December 2011 RADAR 111 rankers, the radio ratings company gave some details from its National Listening Report. Data shows radio added 1.4 million more weekly listeners versus December 2010. The number of persons 12+ listening to radio each week now reaches an estimated 241.3 million, representing 93% of the 12+ population.
RBR-TVBR observation: The numbers are steady. Here's what the National Radio Listening Report looked like around RADAR 106, back in 9/10: More...

David Poltrack sees steady growth for network TV business
The new forecast for 2012 by CBS Corporation Chief Research Officer David Poltrack is a lot like the forecast he delivered last year for 2011 to the annual UBS media conference in New York. If you look at the core business, excluding the Olympics, he's expecting the network TV business to grow by 5% in the coming year. More...
Donald Trump-moderated debate challenged by Karl Rove
Ion Television and Newsmax are bringing a pre-Iowa caucus debate to citizens of the US on 12/27/11, and it will be moderated by Donald Trump. But Republican political operative Karl Rove is blasting the event, and two candidates are said to have declined invitations to participate.
RBR-TVBR observation: We joked about a candidate inadvertently getting fired; but if Rove is right and Trump is going to be handing out an endorsement, in effect all the others are getting fired. All in all, it is to say the least an unusual debate scenario. More...
FCC confirms: Anderson Cooper offering is news show
"Anderson," the daytime talker hosted by CNN's Anderson Cooper, will not have to worry about favoring one candidate over another as it discusses current events and books guests - the FCC has confirmed that the program counts as a news program insofar as equal time rules are concerned.
RBR-TVBR observation: Getting FCC clearance on this matter is hardly earth-shattering. Indeed, we wonder what a talk show would have to do to fail to earn this qualification. More...
Another big hike seen in NFL TV rights fees
Just last week the New York Post reported that the NFL is pressing NBC for a big fee hike to renew its football rights deal. Now Sports Business Daily reports that the league is close to renewals with all three of its TV partners - all with big price hikes. More...
Hearst may pull stations in Sacramento cable systems
Retransmission consent deals with multiple MSOs in Sacramento are set to expire 12/31 and TV stations owned by Hearst Television are beginning to warn viewers in the market they could soon lose local programming. Hearst says it is attempting to negotiate increased retrans. fees for its KCRA-TV (NBC) and KQCA-TV (MyNetworkTV) with Charter, AT&T, SureWest, Wave Broadband, Cableview Communications, Caltel Cable, Coast Cablevision and others. Senate panel addresses electronic SCOTUS coverage
We will be able to watch a Senate Judiciary subcommittee discuss the merits of allowing microphones and television cameras into the Supreme Court to cover its activities. Of course, the same thing could not happen if the Supreme Court were called on to rule on the legislation that might someday originate in that same subcommittee.
RBR-TVBR observation: Could this lead to a Washington-style territorial battle in which the legislative branch issues an order to the judiciary, endorsed as it must be by the executive branch, only to have it laid to waste by the judiciary branch declaring the legislation unconstitutional? It's the stuff of dreams for constitutional attorneys. More...

Madonna gets Super Bowl entertainment nod
NBC and the NFL announced that Madonna will perform in the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show on February 5th. The game and halftime show will be broadcast live on NBC from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Taking apart popular and opposite political movements
When it comes to politics, most districts run either toward Democratic candidates or Republican candidates. There are many jurisdictions, however, that feature a balanced constituency, leaving the seats open to challenge - these are the swing districts that turn into battlegrounds and translate into political advertising windfalls for broadcasters doing business in them. But when it comes to the Tea Party and the Occupy Wall Street movement, we suspect broadcast groups might have holdings in a place that's home to one or the other, but not often to both.
RBR-TVBR observation: The information contained here, cross-referenced with the characteristics of your own station's predominant audience, might help you target politicians and capture a share of their advertising budget in the upcoming election year. More...
Week 10: Broadcast 84, Cable 16
NFL football was again the top draw for both broadcast and cable network in Week 10 of the television season. For NBC that meant the #1 program for all of TV with "Sunday Night Football." In the key 18-49 demo "Monday Night Football" on ESPN was the #1 program on cable, but that put it in 3rd place overall, behind the sitcom "Two and a Half Men" on CBS. A Thanksgiving Day NFL game on the NFL Network also made the top 10, claiming 8th position. More...

RBR-TVBR First: Emmis and Alden to settle all litigation over failed buyout
Following the recent agreement by Emmis to buy back Alden's preferred stock holdings for $16.3 million, RBR-TVBR has learned that all of the lawsuits are being wrapped-up as well.
RBR-TVBR observation: Litigation is always messy and expensive. No doubt the management of Emmis would rather focus on operating the company.

NAB wants Supreme Court to look at ownership rulings
NAB, which favors the possibility of such combos, notes that the DC Circuit found rules making TV duops difficult were arbitrary and capricious, and it is asking the Supreme Court to step in and ideally reach the same conclusion as NAB - that the DC Circuit got it right.

Voters: Pres. Obama Doesn't deserve Reelection; Independents Agree
2012, it appears voters will be looking for an honest candidate, one who will take on the biggest issues facing the country: the weak economy, government spending and job creation. Nearly half (46.3%) don't think President Obama should run for a second term. Review the consumer questions, research, stats at RBR.com.

Cable giants cash out for $3.6 billion in spectrum sale
RBR-TVBR observation: This seems like a good deal on both sides. Verizon Wireless gets more spectrum for expansion without waiting for any clearing by the FCC and Congress, while the cable companies turn a nice profit on their spectrum investment.

Late renewal filing
fines, compared
Not all FCC fines are created equal, and that is especially true when it comes to stations getting nailed for failing to get a license renewal in on time or for forgetting about it entirely. There are several factors that go into what the FCC might charge, as is illustrated by contrasting cases in Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

ION Television teams
with Trump, Newsmax
for GOP debate
Iowa Caucuses are on the calendar for Tuesday 1/3/12, and exactly a week before that, Donald Trump will moderate a debate between the Republican presidential candidates.
RBR-TVBR observation: Trump famously flirted with the possibility of being a participant rather than moderator at this type of event, which puts a bit of an interesting spin on the proceeding. But what we'll be tuning in for is this: To see if the moderator momentarily forgets what program he is on and fires one of the candidates.

ABC will sell ads and provide programming shorts to about 10,000 cabs that receive video from Creative Mobile Technologies' Creative Mobile Media. Cumulus shifting
KGO to News
RBR-TVBR observation: Talk radio is pretty saturated in that market, but so far, all-News isn't. Cumulus keeps KSFO in the market as Talk as well. We are a bit surprised, as the live and local talkers KGO had behind the mic kept it at a #7 in the market, according the Nov. PPMs. KSFO, meanwhile was 17th.
