Study: 93% of listeners stay tuned in during spot breaks
Seems many more listeners actually don't change the dial when the commercials come on than commonly perceived: Arbitron, Media Monitors and Coleman Insights studied 18 million commercial breaks across 48 markets and found radio delivers more than 93% of its lead-in audience during the average commercial break.
RBR-TVBR observation: With PPM we're now able to take a look at listening levels of spot breaks like Nielsen's C3 measurement, and the news is good. But bottom line, the more clutter during a spot break, the more listeners you lose. So it's best to sell more mentions with on-air talent. More...

Chase Carey also loves to pay the NFL
As the networks negotiate with the NFL over extending their broadcast contracts through 2021 at considerably higher prices, it seems the network bosses are just gushing about how much they love the league. First it was CBS Corporation CEO Les Moonves telling the UBS 39th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference in New York that the price is going up for an "unbelievable property." Now News Corporation COO Chase Carey has followed up with his own pitch for a "fabulous franchise" at the UBS confab.
RBR-TVBR observation: While we speak today of the Big Four networks, people who have been in the business a while will recall that it used to be the Big Three, with Fox as an also-ran that got little attention. That all changed in 1993 when Fox outbid CBS to win the NFC portion of the NFL television rights. More...
Cablevision suing Verizon over allegedly false advertising
In a recent FCC report on broadband delivery, the Commission actually singled out cable MVPD Cablevision as bringing service to consumers at a considerably faster clip than advertised - a good thing. It says that Verizon advertisements about its internet service can thus be considered false and is going to court to try to have the ads pulled. More...
CALM Act adorns short FCC December agenda
Bipartisan members of Congress and the White House have agreed - commercials on television can be too loud in comparison to the programming in which they are embedded, and via the CALM Act, they have instructed the FCC to do something about it. At the next Open Meeting, the FCC will do something.
RBR-TVBR observation: We have heard the effectiveness of CALM questioned, since program decibel levels accommodate pitched battles, meaning loud ads will still seem to blare out when surrounded by conversational program loudness levels. Guess we'll find out before too long. More...
TiVo links charity to recording of Christmas classic
"It's a Wonderful Life" will be airing on NBC Christmas Eve. While nearly everyone in the US has seen the 1946 movie multiple times, it still draws a big audience. And this year TiVo is making a charitable contribution for each of its customers who records the NBC airing on their TiVo digital video recorder.
RBR-TVBR observation: Sounds like something that NBC affiliates could get some promotional mileage out of as well. More...
MythBusters busts a hole in the wall
The Discovery Channel show "MythBusters" often makes a lot of noise with its science experiments designed to prove whether widely circulated assumptions are really true or false. Once in a while, things get out of hand, as they did Tuesday in California east of San Francisco. More...

House Democrats tell FCC to leave ownership rules alone
The FCC is expected to finally address rules affecting local media ownership as part of the quadrennial review of 2010, sometime in 2012. The NAB is taking its case, that cross-ownership and television duopoly rules should be relaxed, to the Supreme Court. But House Democrats are telling the FCC to leave the rules in place. More...
Harry Morgan dead at 96 (video)
He appeared in numerous movies and TV series, but Harry Morgan was best known as "Colonel Sherman Potter" on "M*A*S*H." Morgan has died at 96.
RBR-TVBR observation: Yes, he was a favorite actor of just about everyone. True M*A*S*H fans will recall that he first appeared on a single episode in 1974 as Major General Bartford Hamilton Steele, an officer not in control of his mental faculties. More...
McClatchy's newspaper business is less bad
Speaking at the UBS media conference in New York, McClatchy Company CEO Gary Pruitt reported that business is improving. In the newspaper business, though, that means that the negative numbers are getting smaller.
RBR-TVBR observation: OK, explain to us again why Warren Buffett and John Lynch have been buying newspapers. We really don't get it. More...

Merlin Media waves its wand over Philadelphia
WKDN-FM Camden NJ is headed for Merlin Media, where it will represent the company's 3rd market and 4th station. It is for all intents and purposes a stick deal - the seller is noncommercial Family Stations for $22.5M.
RBR-TVBR observation: A station going from Harold Camping to Randy Michaels must set some kind of all-time record.

Entercom's David Field sees problem ahead for Pandora
Field insisted that radio's listenership remains strong and said the new kid on the block, Pandora, faces a problem as it tries to become profitable.
RBR-TVBR observation: It seemed strange to us that the set-up for the question seemed to assume that the Pandora IPO was a rousing success.

CBS boss Les Moonves confirms rising NFL prices
He didn't get into specifics, such as the 60% average hike cited by Sports Business Daily, but Moonves siad that NFL football is an "unbelievable property." So, he acknowledged, "the price of poker is going up."
RBR-TVBR observation: When CBS lost its NFL contract to upstart Fox in 1993 it sent shockwaves through the TV industry, with numerous stations even switching affiliations. Moonves doesn't want to see that happen again, and for good reason.

Zenith: US ad growth
to be 2.2%
Is expecting increases in ad spend of 3.5% in 2012 and 2013. Increases come on top of a year of recovery in 2011 that should see advertising grow 2.2%. Outlook is in part the result of strong U.S. retail sales. Zenith also had some good things to say about Radio.
RBR-TVBR observation: Broadcasters remember, the more you know about the consumer and their buying intentions and behavior the better your local sales efforts will increase. It is all about the Consumer!

LPTV advocacy praises House spectrum bill
RBR-TVBR observation: There were disagreements between the two parties that may gum up the works when there is an attempt to merge this bill with whatever comes out of the Democrat-controlled Senate. However, differences regarding broadcast safeguards were not prominent among them.
