CEO's say NO more pacing revenues for radio
That is the take from the NAB group fly-in last Thursday and Friday, 2-6 &7/03. Numbers will be kept confidential and Wall Street will get its briefing during regular quarterly conference calls. Groups were unanimous that Wall Street with their hedge funds and short traders are, in some cases, making life more difficult than just running their groups. RAB and President/CEO Gary Fries has been told to only give the basics of stating to Wall Street and the trade press if radio is doing well or not. No guruing.

Commissioners to have a ball in Richmond
We've known for some time about the open FCC meeting for public discussion of the FCC's review of broadcast ownership rules scheduled for Richmond 2/27 (1/24 RBR Daily Epaper). We know also know where: the Greater Richmond Convention Center's Ballroom Building will be the site. The meeting will run from 10AM-4PM eastern. The meeting is open to the public, with first-come, first-served seating. The specific agenda is forthcoming in the near future. | RBR Observation |

Cox shuffles the deck
Three Cox Radio (N:CXR) employees have been promoted, and several market execs have taken on added responsibility. Marc Morgan has been upped to Executive VP and COO. Dick Ferguson also gets Executive VP stripes. Caroline Devine, who is VP/GM of a pair of San Antonio FMs, is upped to Regional VP and adds oversight of the group's Honolulu cluster.

Hearst-Argyle revenues up 21%, cash flow 37%
As the name would indicate, Hearst-Argyle Television (N:HTV) is overwhelmingly a TV company, so radio is hardly ever mentioned in the company's quarterly conference calls. Interep stock moves to SmallCap market
After many months of trading as a penny stock - - with no likelihood of getting back above $5 per share anytime soon, Interep (O:IREP) announced late Friday (2/7) that Nasdaq has moved its stock from the Nasdaq National Market to the Nasdaq SmallCap Market. The change is effective today. "The company believes that there will be no effect on the number of market makers, trading volume, or institutional interest in its Class A common stock, or its ability to raise capital," Interep said in its announcement.

Meissner resigns from Journal board
Journal Communications has informed its employee stockholders that David Meissner has resigned from the company's board of directors. Meissner had represented the interests of the founding Grant family, which remains the company's largest shareholder with approximately a 10% stake. According to a letter to shareholders from CEO Steve Smith, Meissner stepped down from the board to retain his independence in representing the family's interests as the company explores sources of new capital, possibly including an IPO (10/29/02 RBR Daily Epaper). "David emphasized the family's ongoing support for our company and its leadership," Smith said in his letter. Meissner's resignation was effective 2/5.

More than 6,000 people arrived in Nashville over the weekend for the 60th Annual National Religious Broadcasters Conference. The NRB's opening general session kicked off Saturday night to a standing room only crowd invoking this year’s theme “Changing World, Unchanging Message.” This morning, the highlight is a visit from the president of the United States. | Full Story Click Here |

Amber Alert bill stalled in House
The Amber Alert bill that would craft and fund a nationwide missing child alert is stalled in the House, after recently passing the Senate. Proponents of the measure, including Ed Smart, the father of missing girl Elizabeth Smart, appealed last week to House members to pass the bill. The House version of the bill is co-sponsored by Reps. Martin Frost (D-VA) and Jennifer Dunn (R-OR), who have opted to seek passage of the Senate version - - re-introduced by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) - -(1/17 RBR Daily Epaper) to expedite the process.

Titanic blunder by radio's juggernaut?
Will the pundits be pointing out that there is a link between rearranging the radio formats in Minot ND and rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic? It just could be a possibility - - Clear Channel Communications (N:CCU) owns all six in-town stations in Minot and it is concurrently putting artifacts from the famously-doomed liner on display in Los Angeles. | Full Story Click Here | RBR Observation |

SAG, AFTRA board approve consolidation plan
Directors of both the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) voted over the weekend to approve a consolidation plan for the unions. The vote was unanimous for the 69 SAG directors, but three of the 75 AFTRA directors voted "no."

With the merger resolution approved by both boards, SAG and AFTRA have directed their union staffs and the committees who drafted the consolidation plan to begin work on the next steps - - a constitution, a business plan and a plan for implementation and transition. Those are to be presented to both boards for another vote 4/5, followed by a vote of each union's rank-and-file members. Both AFTRA and SAG require 60% membership approval for the merger to take place.

Terror threat level raised
The US government on Friday (2/7) increased its terrorism threat level to "Orange" - - the second highest alert - - from "Yellow," citing new threats that terrorists were likely to target 'soft" targets such as apartment buildings and hotels. The increased terror threat designation sent stock prices lower - - reversing an early rise which had come after a government report that unemployment had dropped to 5.7% in January.

Coke drops McCann-Erickson
Coca-Cola Co. announced it is dropping Interpublic Group's McCann-Erickson as creative AOR for its flagship Coke Classic brand in the US. Coke said WPP's Berlin Cameron/Red Cell, which won praise last month for its role in designing a new campaign for Coke Classic, would take over the role.

Coca-Cola's new campaign, dubbed "Coca-Cola ... Real," features actresses Penelope Cruz and Courteney Cox and boxing legend Muhammad Ali. It was launched in the United States, though the Atlanta-based soft drink maker expects to adapt it in many of its more than 200 markets around the world.

Connecticut 6% advertising tax getting vote soon
A vote on Connecticut's proposed 6% sales tax on state and national advertising is imminent. Democrats in the state Legislature included the tax in its package of tax hikes to address a $500M budget shortfall. Florida adopted a similar tax in 1986, but it was repealed because of a successful advertiser boycott.

Dan Jaffe, EVP/Association of National Advertisers, told AdAge that Connecticut is the latest state to look at advertising taxes to fill budget shortfalls; seven other states are considering similar proposals. The organization sent out a warning to members about the proposal and also wrote state legislative leaders warning an ad tax would hurt local companies.

State Farm stages "lifestages" promotion
DDB Chicago is putting together an integrated media campaign for client State Farm, which is going to build on its "We Live Where You Live" theme to call attention to its financial services offerings. It wants to help its clients financially prepare for future transitions, what it calls "lifestages." TV and radio are part of the mix, which will also include print, direct mail, agent sales materials, point-of-sale and the Internet.

ABC Radio (N:DIS) now has the keys to its latest acquisition - - WBYU-AM in the Big Easy (10/8/02 RBR Daily Epaper). Look for a Mouse infestation at the 1450 kHz facility soon - - although Radio Disney is not yet posting it on its website, the WBYU website is reduced to two words: "So long." In Farrell PA, noncommercial Holy Family Communications has taken over WPAO-AM 1450 from D&E Communications (11/6/02 RBR Daily Epaper). The deal is valued at $350K, although $100K is in the form of a donation by the seller to the buyer. It's on the fringe of the Youngstown OH market. Broker: John Pierce

FCC open meeting agenda announced
The February open meeting of the FCC is scheduled for 2/13 at 9:30 AM eastern. The meeting will constitute a bit of a breather for the broadcast press (like us) - - the three items on the agenda are not directly or obliquely aimed at radio, television, cable or any related industries.

Item one is "Revisions of Part 15 of the Commission's Rules Regarding Ultra-Wideband Transmission Systems." That will be followed by #2: "Amendment of Part 1, Subpart N of the Commission's Rules Concerning Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Disability in the Commission's Programs and Activities." Finally, #3 will be "Review of the Section 251 Unbundling Obligations of Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers."

Four down weeks
Stock prices fell Friday, capping a fourth straight down week on Wall Street. The good news that the nation's unemployment rate fell to 5.7% in January wasn't enough to counteract traders' war worries.

The Dow Industrials fell 65 points for the day, or 0.8%, to close at 7,864.

The Radio Index fell even more - - off 2.784, or 1.3%, to 220.701. That left RBR's index at its lowest point since 10/15/02.

Arbitron was at the head of the retreating pack, falling 3.2%. Spanish Broadcasting System dropped 2.7% and rival Hispanic Broadcasting was off 2.1%.

Not one index stock was up, although Radio One's Class A stock was unchanged. Its non-voting Class D stock was up 0.8%.

Friday's notice that a quartet of non-commercial FM stations was just approved to set up shop in Bismarck ND (2/7 RBR Daily Epaper) brought us news of even more activity on the FM band in that area.

Regarding your story about the abundance of non-coms in Bismarck ND, there could even be more stations on the air very soon, if those who have applied for LPFM frequencies are approved by the Commission, there could be a Religious station located at 106.1 mHz. The North Dakota Department of Transportation has applied for a frequency at 102.9 mHz along with three Religious applicants for 107.7 mHz. When the FCC gets through sorting everything out, even more signals will be heard in Bismarck.

hired as GSM at HBC/Las Vegas

Hispanic Broadcasting/Las Vegas has named Frank DiMatteo GSM. "The addition of Frank DiMatteo as our new General Sales Manager is a result of our desire to effectively grow the Hispanic advertising dollars for Las Vegas," said Dana Demerjian, HBC/Las Vegas VP/GM. "DiMatteo's proven ability to build teamwork and communication will be instrumental in executing the strategy and focus needed to build revenue for the rapidly growing Hispanic Las Vegas market."

Bruce Gilbert, Director/Programming Susquehanna/Dallas, is moving to ABC's Bristol, CT-based ESPN Radio Network as GM. He takes over for Eric Schoenfeld, who moved to ESPN TV.

HBC names Scott Elberg Director of Sales in NY
HBC New York, Inc., a subsidiary of Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation, announced Scott Elberg has been named Director of Sales for WADO-AM and WCAA-FM. As Director of Sales for HBC New York, Elberg will be responsible for managing the local and national sales departments as well as implementing strategies focused at attracting new business to the stations.

He brings 20 years of radio sales and management experience, most recentlyas GM of CC Radio's NYC stations, WKTU-FM and WHTZ-FM.

Beth Davis, Michael Young earn SVP/Market
Manager stripes

Beth Davis, VP/GM of KEZK-FM and KYKY-FM St. Louis, becomes Infinity SVP/Market Manager there with the addition of KMOX-AM. She takes the KMOX role after GM Karen Carroll resigned 1/27-likely from the Charles Jaco fiasco.

Michael Young, VP/GM of KDKA-AM Pittsburgh since 1999, adds for WBZZ-FM, WDSY-FM and WZPT-FM to become SVP/Market Manager there. The added stations continue to be overseen by GM Don Oylear.

Novak joins ESPN Radio 710 in LA
ABC/ESPN O&O KSPN-AM "ESPN Radio 710" announced that Robert Novak has joined the station in sports sales. Novak had previously been Director of Sales at Engage Media and GSM of the LA Clippers. His resume also includes several LA radio stations.
