Sky's the limit for 2012 political advertising
Analysts have projected record revenues for broadcasters from this year's elections. But just how big the political jackpot will be remains to be seen. Due to the Citizens United court ruling which gave free-rein to independent political action committees (PAC) to raise and spend money, creating the so-called Super-PACs, Sinclair Broadcast Group executives indicated in the company's quarterly conference that the final figure could be beyond what anyone expects at this point.

RBR-TVBR observation: The airwaves are going to be really crowded come October and early November. Car dealers, retailers and any other type of business you can think of would do well to schedule their advertising to run heavily ahead of that crunch. More...

Clear Channel on deck for earnings report
CC Media Holdings, the parent company of Clear Channel Communications, reports its Q4 and full year 2011 financial results on Tuesday morning (2/21). The thinly traded "pink sheets" stock is not followed officially by any equity analyst (although they do participate in the quarterly conference call to gauge radio trends and/or because they do officially analyze Clear Channel Outdoor). But there are other analysts who follow the company with intensity.

RBR-TVBR observation: Clear Channel is a much better proxy for the radio business as a whole than Emmis and is likely to post better financial results. The best news is that core business is picking up, even if the latest report from the RAB indicates that the gains are uneven. More...

Romney plays a Michigan radio Trump card
Real estate mogul and reality television star Donald Trump put a temporary end to speculation that he would run as a third party candidate in the 2012 presidential election when he endorsed the candidacy of Mitt Romney. Now he's going to bat for Romney in the hotly contested Michigan primary. He's on a tour of the state via its local radio stations - and we're not talking ads - we're talking live interviews in multiple markets. More...

FiOS looking for young urban professionals
Are young urban professionals still called Yuppies? We confess we're not sure, but we are sure that Verizon wants them subscribing to its FiOS service for their voice, internet and television programming. After testing a campaign to enlist 25-39s in Washington DC, it is expanding its campaign into several new urban markets.

RBR-TVBR observation: Most of the big companies that have ever offered voice, video or internet service are now offering one-stop shopping for all three. The competition is still shaking out, and it will be interesting to see what this sector looks like in ten years. More...

Availability of TV spectrum volunteers in question
As RBR-TVBR has noted during the debate over television incentive auctions, the odds of finding licensees willing to relinquish their channel space for a one-time payday are the lowest in the large markets where the need for it is highest. A report in the Los Angeles Times tends to confirm this notion. More...

ESPN in damage control mode over Jeremy Lin comments
ESPN fired a headline writer for its mobile service and suspended a TV anchor for 30 days over use of the phrase "chink in the armor" in reference to New York Knicks star Jeremy Lin. The NBA player's parents immigrated to the US from Taiwan and he is one of the few Asian-American players in the league. More...

SAG and AFTRA send members the merger pros and cons
Members of both the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) are now being asked to vote on merging the unions, following overwhelming approval by the national boards of each union. Mobile fans wary of piracy legislation
The research gurus at Prosper Mobile Insights were not at all surprised to learn that serious fans of smartphones and tablets were wary of the possible negative impact of new legislation such as SOPA or PIPA. It was precisely this citizen reaction to a highly influential internet blackout day in January that led to the bills' withdrawal. More...

Another positive indicator on consumer confidence
We keep our eyes on the material coming out on the economy, and there is no doubt that confidence in the likelihood of improvement it is perking up. Today we have before us the monthly report from Prosper Business Development's BIGinsight wing - and it joins the crowd that is producing similar results. While there is not a rip-roaring this-slump-is-over breakthrough evidenced when consumers are queried, there are definite signs that many believe the economy has started to move toward recovery.

RBR-TVBR observation: Is an economic recovery finally at hand? The economy hasn't caught fire yet, but there sure does seem to be a lot of smoke, both from the consumer and the business side of the equation. Like everybody else, we have a stake in this - and we're more than ready to keep this ball rolling. More...

Students create TV spot to recruit students (video)
The University of New Mexico looked no further than its own campus to create TV spots to run within the school's televised NCAA games. Students in the UNM Communication and Marketing Department created a 30-second and a 60-second "institutional spot" to air when the school's team, the Lobos, play on national TV. More...

A lot of people are in a giving mood on Valentine's Day - and a wide range of gifts tend to be exchanged, most of a romantic nature, and mostly between men and women, and boys and girls. Unlicensed spectrum may be the ticket for minority entrepreneurs
Latoya Livingston, writing for the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council, said that the ability for socially-disadvantaged business to bid for spectrum abandoned by television broadcasters may be ultimately meaningless due to the costs of building out and maintaining the infrastructure to use it. But if there is enough unlicensed space protected for smaller entrepreneurs it could be just the ticket to get SBDs into the digital door. More...

Elections lead week of balanced news coverage
Lately the heated battle for the Republican presidential nomination has induced news organizations to give it the lion's share of their coverage. However, according to the Project for Excellence in Journalism, that changed a bit during the week of 2/6-12. The election still led, but two other narratives made it into double digits and a third just missed. More...

Yucaipa in line for Inner City - disputes IRS claim
No other bidder came forward to make an offer for the Inner City Media Corporation (ICMC) stations, so the Thursday (2/16) auction was cancelled and a new company created by Yucaipa Companies and the other senior debt holders won with its "stalking horse" credit bid of $180 million. US Bankruptcy Judge Shelley Chapman is expected to approve the sale at a Tuesday (2/21) hearing - if ICMC and the lenders succeed in convincing her to dismiss an IRS objection.

RBR-TVBR observation: Pretend you're back in the year, oh let's say 1999, and you had the opportunity to buy a full power FM in New York City and a full-power FM in San Francisco for $180 million - and with 15 other stations thrown in, no less! You couldn't have believed such a bargain was real. But in 2012 no one even stepped up to top that price. It is a different world.

Radio hits Q4 revenue speed bump en route to positive 2011
The radio business suffered a 2% drop in overall Q4 revenue, the blame for which can be laid entirely at the doorstep of the spot business, which was the only down category among the four tracked by the Radio Advertising Bureau and Miller, Kaplan, Arase & Co. But radio stations were still able to record an increase in year-over-year income.

RBR-TVBR observation: Although the election year advertising bump is not nearly as pronounced in the radio biz as it is for television operators, it will help. The economy, which seems to finally be demonstrating some vitality, should help more. We would like to see radio drive a healthy increase in the national demand for black ink this year.

Payroll bill and incentive auctions headed for Oval Office
A bill that will extend a temporary employment tax cut for Americans through the end of the year, extend benefits for the unemployed and maintain reimbursement levels for doctors who see Medicare patients has passed both Houses of Congress. The bill will use incentive auctions of television spectrum to help offset costs that will result from other elements of the total legislative package.
02/20/12 RBR-TVBR #35

TWC, MSG have a handshake agreement
The retransmission consent battle being fought in Washington concerns broadcasters v. MVPDs, but the biggest dispute of late has not involved broadcasters at all.

RBR-TVBR observation: MVPDs should simply get used to it and bargain for a fair price.
