Internet video fueling renewed interest in over-the-air television
As more and more quality video content becomes available online, some consumers are finding that it can be combined with an old-fashioned television antenna to receive local broadcast programming off-air and kiss big cable bills good-bye. According to the Wall Street Journal, rabbit ears are starting to hop off the shelves. And it calls into question how many TV broadcasters will be willing to hop off the airwaves.
RBR-TVBR observation: Communications legislation is usually based on a snapshot of a fluid process that includes complex market and technical facets. Against that backdrop, Congress just voted to authorize incentive TV spectrum auctions. But how they will actually play out is still a mystery. Stay tuned! More...

Comcast in deals with stars to launch new cable networks
Comcast, which struck a deal with the FCC to add more minority-owned channels when it bought NBCUniversal, announced deals to add two African-American and two Hispanic networks to its cable systems. The new networks were proposed by Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Robert Rodriguez, and Constantino "Said" Schwarz.
RBR-TVBR observation: Launching with Comcast, the biggest MSO of all, obviously gives a big leg up to a new network, as evidenced by the success of TV One. But delivery to millions of TV households is just the beginning. More...
More on YouTube's recruitment for new channels

Winning at office politics
Most of us probably consider ourselves lucky that we are not in the business of politics. However, at the same time, it is a fact of life that politics exist just about everywhere in one form or another, and over half of American workers believe playing the game is necessary to keep a career moving in the right direction. And even if you don't, you are no doubt amidst others who do. Here's a helpful guide to playing the game.
RBR-TVBR observation: We've looked at the suggestions that go along with this study. Some we've used personally for years; others we wish we were better at. And we can say that we endorse them all. If you decided not to click on this story, but have three or four minutes, we'd suggest that it can't hurt to give it a look. More...

Indie artists and radio airplay
By Ken Dardis, President, Audio Graphics
A vibrant conversation is going on at Digital Music News. Under the headline of "Study: A Majority of Musicians Are Making $0 from Streaming Platforms..." there are comments ranging from it's no surprise, to outrage, to a bashing of the study's authors with claims. We have created a sea of options for consumers, an organization (SoundExchange) that was formed by labels - and which sends more money to the labels than any individual musician. There are also crippling reporting procedures for participating streaming entities, and a long list of artists who have gone unpaid. More...

Stocks end mixed after Dow crosses 13K - 2/21/12
European agreement on the bailout package for Greece gave the stock market a boost and the Dow Jones Industrial Average spent some time above 13,000 - where it hadn't been since May 2008. But the rally ran out of steam and the market closed mixed. The DJIA was up 16 points, or 0.1%, at 12,966. The S&P 500 was also up, but the Nasdaq Composite down. Broadcasting stocks ended lower. The RBR Radio Index was down 1.441, or 0.4%, to 354.579. The TVBR Television Index was down 5.224, or 2%, to 258.410. More...

Sky's the limit for 2012 political advertising
Analysts have projected record revenues for broadcasters from this year's elections. But just how big the political jackpot will be remains to be seen. Due to the Citizens United court ruling which gave free-rein to independent political action committees (PAC) to raise and spend money, creating the so-called Super-PACs, Sinclair Broadcast Group executives indicated in the company's quarterly conference that the final figure could be beyond what anyone expects at this point.
RBR-TVBR observation: The airwaves are going to be really crowded come October and early November. Car dealers, retailers and any other type of business you can think of would do well to schedule their advertising to run heavily ahead of that crunch.

Clear Channel on deck
for earnings report
CC Media Holdings, the parent company of Clear Channel Communications, reports its Q4 and full year 2011 financial results on Tuesday morning (2/21). The thinly traded "pink sheets" stock is not followed officially by any equity analyst (although they do participate in the quarterly conference call to gauge radio trends and/or because they do officially analyze Clear Channel Outdoor). But there are other analysts who follow the company with intensity.
RBR-TVBR observation: Clear Channel is a much better proxy for the radio business as a whole than Emmis and is likely to post better financial results. The best news is that core business is picking up, even if the latest report from the RAB indicates that the gains are uneven.

FiOS looking for young urban professionals
Are young urban professionals still called Yuppies? We confess we're not sure, but we are sure that Verizon wants them subscribing to its FiOS service for their voice, internet and television programming. After testing a campaign to enlist 25-39s in Washington DC, it is expanding its campaign into several new urban markets.
RBR-TVBR observation: Most of the big companies that have ever offered voice, video or internet service are now offering one-stop shopping for all three. The competition is still shaking out, and it will be interesting to see what this sector looks like in ten years.

Availability of TV spectrum volunteers in question
As RBR-TVBR has noted during the debate over television incentive auctions, the odds of finding licensees willing to relinquish their channel space for a one-time payday are the lowest in the large markets where the need for it is highest. A report in the Los Angeles Times tends to confirm this notion.

Romney plays a Michigan radio Trump card
Real estate mogul and reality television star Donald Trump put a temporary end to speculation that he would run as a third party candidate in the 2012 presidential election when he endorsed the candidacy of Mitt Romney. Now he's going to bat for Romney in the hotly contested Michigan primary.
