Eddie FrittsFritts sees broadcasters
becoming cautious on indecency
Don't look for the NAB to bring back its Radio and TV Codes as a result of the FCC's fining WKRK-FM Detroit $27.5K for indecency. When a reporter suggested that yesterday at NAB2003, NAB President and CEO Eddie Fritts quipped, "We'll be right behind the cable industry." | Full Story Click Here |

Clear Channel jettisons indies
"We have zero tolerance for pay for play," said Clear Channel (N:CCU) President/COO Mark Mays, "but want to avoid even the suggestion that such a practice takes place within our company." To that end, radio's mega-group is ending its relationships with independent record promoters. Existing contracts will be allowed to expire this summer.

Cumulus follows beat of a different drummer
Cumulus Media (O:CMLS) will not be making a change in its relationship with independent promoters. Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey told RBR, "Cumulus is comfortable with its policy of centralizing our independent relationship. Our approach enables our local PDs to focus on the music's quality rather than its promotion. We, too, are working to evolve the relationship into a more traditional type similar to the marketing relationship we have with producers of filmed and live entertainment."

Buyer comments on Sirius' upcoming gay channel
We asked for a quick comment from Natalie Swed Stone, Managing Partner/Director of National Radio Services, OMD on Sirius' upcoming launch of the nation's only 24/7 broadcast service with news and entertainment programming for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender community (4/9 RBR Daily Epaper #70).

Will the market embrace it, given the past problems of companies such as Triangle Broadcasting? "I think it's a good use of satellite radio-providing something that doesn't already exist for consumers. To market Sirius to gays is a smart strategic business move. Will there be advertiser demand for this?-there will be some advertisers who will look to target this segment."

May 2003 RBR Magazine

May RBR: Part III on minority measurement issues:
The African-American audience
  • How are falling diary response and return rates hurting African-American broadcasters?
  • What about the accuracy of sample proportionality?
  • Tom Skinner, Arbitron Advisory Council Chairman, says there is something that's "fairly controversial" Arbitron has in the works to increase response rates. That will be presented at the 5/1 meeting in front of COLRAM, the MRC and others. We examine what that might be and its effect.
  • Increased sample size--a solution? One option Arbitron offers to broadcasters is an increased the sample size in certain markets. Why are those programs needed, why does Arbitron charge for them and how helpful are they?
  • Blame it on the diaries: We also look at how some networks are claiming RADAR 76 undermeasured the African-American population, especially with female demos.

NTR is often found outside the media department. When looking for sponsorship dollar, check out the marketing department, public relations, sales, advertising, multicultural marketing...even human resources. Each of these departments has money to spend on sponsorship so don't limit yourself with only one department. If you liked this tip, you will love Sylvia's training tools. Radio Stocks

Mixed results for radio
With the conspicuous exception of Fisher stock, which lost almost a dollar a share, most radio stocks had either a modest upswing or drop in Wednesday trading. It was a rare company indeed that saw its stock move as much as two bits in either direction. Perhaps Radio One typified the day - - it was in the black, but it gained only eight cents over two stock offerings. Nonetheless, the results weren't bad in light of concerns on the street about gloomy corporate profit reports, overshadowing the success of the military in Iraq.

Here's how stocks fared on Wednesday
