Kovas claims third AM in Chicago
Kovas Communications, owned by Frank Kovas, has a deal to buy WCGO-AM Chicago for $750K. The station, a 1kw daytimer on 1600 kHz, is licensed to Chicago Heights, IL, so it will fit right in with Kovas' existing suburban stations on 1580 and 1590. The seller is George Arroyo's Q Broadcasting Corp. Broker: Doyle Hadden, Hadden & Associates
RBR Observation:
So how will this work? Quite nicely, actually. Chicago Heights is south of downtown Chicago. Aurora, IL, home to 1580 WKKD, is west of downtown and Evanston, with 1590 WONX-AM, is on the North Shore. Kovas' existing two stations aren't simulcast, but the potential is there to cover most of the metro on three adjacent signals. More importantly, perhaps, Kovas could now look at some engineering maneuvers to enhance one of the signals at the expense (or elimination) of the other two. WONX is the big gun of the three, with 3.5kw day and 2.5kw night.
