American Idol judge to headline Radio Luncheon

No, it's not going to be Paula Abdul spilling all about her alleged tryst with an "American Idol" contestant. The Idol judge you'll be hearing from in Philadelphia next month (9/23) at the NAB Radio show is Randy Jackson. The connection to radio is that his new show, "Randy Jackson's Hit List," is launching next month on Westwood One. "Randy is expected to talk about future music trends and its impact on radio. We're especially pleased to have a talent like Randy Jackson joining us in Philadelphia. Our thanks to Westwood One for helping to make it happen," said John David, NAB Executive VP/Radio. Before he became a household name from his work on Idol, Jackson spend eight years as VP of A&R at Columbia Records and four years as Sr. VP of A&R at MCA Records.

The series will reach 90% of African American households in the U.S., with all 26 of the top 26 markets in the demo confirmed. Most markets will air the show in late night on Saturdays or in primetime on Sundays.

CBS issues first "pod-casting call"

CBS says it is taking the traditional casting call into new territory: podcasting. The network is searching for an amateur DJ to interview CBS stars and create a podcast about the new fall TV season. The podcaster will join the nation's top DJs at the CBS Radio Junket on September 10th in Hollywood to interview CBS talent for the podcast, which will be made available to millions via www.CBS.com and Infinity Broadcasting's KYOURADIO, the recently announced podcasting radio station, located in San Francisco at 1550 KYCY-AM and streamed online at www.kyouradio.com. Entrants will need to create a mock three-minute interview to compete for the gig. Info at CBS.com and kyouradio.com.

KNBR host suspended

Susquehanna Radio's KNBR-AM San Francisco has suspended Sports/Talk host Larry Krueger after he railed at the Giants' batting lineup as "brain-dead Caribbean hitters hacking at slop nightly." Team Manager Felipe Alou, himself from the Dominican Republic, refused to accept an apology issued by Krueger and vowed to publicize the ethnic slur in his home country, including a notification to the president of the Dominican Republic.

"It was not my intention to offend or demean any group or individual with the Giants. I am sorry to those I may have offended and rest assured, there was no malice intended," Krueger said in a statement posted on the KNBR website.

"Larry's choice of words in characterizing a group of players was unfortunate and he was the first to recognize that and apologize. But we felt that stronger action was required in this case. We need to make it clear that Larry is free to comment on the Giants performance on the field and we stand by his right to do that. However, when those comments offend any segment of the team, then we have to act," said Susquehanna Sr. VP and Market Manager Tony Salvadore, who announced the one-week suspension. At this point, Krueger is due to return to the air on August 15th. KNBR is the radio flagship station for the Giants.

Vince Gonzales named Broadcast Journalist of the Year by NAHJ

CBS News correspondent Vince Gonzales has been named Broadcast Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ). The NAHJ Awards honor journalists for their professional achievements and their leadership in bringing greater awareness to issues affecting the Latino community. Gonzales is being honored for his body of work, including extensive investigative reporting on the Enron scandal, which proved that the company's employees were stealing power from California while gouging consumers and causing blackouts. Those reports helped launch several federal investigations, as well as attempts to prosecute Enron employees and executives. Gonzales will receive the honor at an awards dinner on 9/15 in DC.
