SFC Melick - 'In His Words'

"To give you a little background, I am with the 325th field hospital out of Independence MO. We have been in the desert for almost 1 year and away from our families. A reserve unit called to active duty with more months to go. Many of the members of my unit do medical jobs in the civilian world, some college students or just plain business folks, the average age of these men and women is 25. I am one of the older ones having almost 20 years of service in and they call me Grandpa." Many of our soldiers here are kids themselves and more than many away from home for the first time. This is going to be a Xmas that many will not forget. We will all be together in the sand as a happy family many miles away, while people in the US can be free and with their loved ones.

Everyone seems to have forgotten about Afghanistan, it is truly being known as the other war. Iraq is the center stage, but there is fighting still in Afghanistan. The soldiers who are in Afghanistan are not looking for the media coverage but rather for the word to be out that 'We are Soldiers - Everywhere'.

People in the US seem to take many things for granted as we should be blessed that we have all that we have. As you can see in the pictures the world is not as lucky as we are here.

Kids loose arms at young ages (picture of me and special patient) and many of the soldiers are kids themselves and many away from home for the first time.

This is going to be a Xmas that many will not forget. We will all be together in the sand as a happy family many miles away while people in the US can be free and with there loved ones. You know I think it is said best by a verse in the song American solider as to how we all feel over in Afghanistan. 'We don't do it for the glory we just do it anyway.' - We do it for the freedom of everyone."

To those of you who read RBR & TVBR each morning - - and especially those with clout at the top levels of media companies - - I request and need your help to help our troops.

IDEAS to Send

1. Check your prize closets

2. what your companies sell on your websites, coffee mugs with Good Coffee, Pull over shirts.

3. Entertainment: CDs, CD players, DVD's and a few DVD players (since no satellite is available).

4. Any sporting goods and items each will treasure and share.

5. We have vast resources. Hey Mel: If Howard Stern can give away Sirius Radio Boom Boxes in the streets of New York City, then how about shipping 40 to the 325th Field Hospital. They can't receive Sirius there, but it would be a hell of a gift!

6. Now just think what you would like to see if you were in their position - - then help.

Pack your gift box with only 40 items and ship ASAP to:

FYI: Ever wonder about the items suggested by the American Red Cross to send to our soldiers? (Some of these make me flash back to 1969. Didn't have disposable cameras then and I didn't need baby wipes. What was needed was a piece of home - - another time another place.) We can and must do better.

* Hard Candy
* Chocolate ( only in cold weather)
* Peanuts, pretzels, beef jerky and other snack foods
* Powdered drink mixes i.e. Gatorade, hot chocolate
* Hand sanitizer, hand lotion
* Chap Stick
* Baby wipes

* Cross word puzzles (little books)
* Decks of cards

Thank you and Merry Christmas
