Radio station fights for new ratings technology

It may seem an odd thing in America, where there has been resistance to the adoption of new audience measurement techniques. However, in Great Britain, at least one station owner is taking an opposite tack, according to Reuters. It's suing because the measuring entity there isn't adopting new technology fast enough.

The radio company is Wireless Group, operator of what is called a TalkSport radio station. The measurement service is RAJAR.

RAJAR won, and Wireless had to pay the equivalent of 1.35M in combined court costs. It vowed to soldier on, however. RAJAR has promised to abandon diaries by 2007, but Wireless doesn't want to wait that long, saying its audience is drastically undercounted by that method. It says a RAJAR measurement pegs its audience at 2.1M, whereas the number swells to 5.9M under an electronic system.

WMAL-AM listeners contributed 1 million to the Fisher House Foundation in 38 days.

ABC Radio's WMAL-AM DC Operation Homefront campaign has just raised 1 million for the Fisher House Foundation this holiday season. In just 38 days, 630 WMAL listeners answered the call in an inspiring fashion, demonstrating each day their unprecedented patriotism to our wounded military personnel and their families.

Said WMAL President/GM Chris Berry: "I want to thank each and every person that contributed to this extraordinary cause," said Berry. "We have quality listeners that continue to hear us loud and clear and respond with great conviction."

"630 WMAL and its listeners have provided us with much needed funds to assist our wounded soldiers and their families during this time of need," said David Coker, Executive Director of the Fisher House Foundation. "The support for Fisher House through this campaign has truly been a blessing this holiday season."

Max Brown, radio network founder, passes

Max Brown, who helped create a network of radio stations serving Nebraska agriculture, died Wednesday, according to the AP. He was 93. Brown founded KRVN-AM in Lexington in 1951, and was one of several leaders of Nebraska farm organizations who started the Nebraska Rural Radio Association. That association grew from KRVN into a six-station network that includes KNEB-A/FM in Scottsbluff and KTIC-AM and KWPN-FM in West Point. More than 4,200 Nebraska farm and ranch families own the association, for which Brown served as executive secretary and general manager until his retirement in 1979. In 1981, Brown married his sixth-grade classmate, Muriel Humphrey, the widow of former Vice President Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota. She died in 1998.
