NAB needs a few good mentors

...and the people it wants to mentor are members of the entire broadcasting industry who will gather next year in Las Vegas for NAB2006. The annual confab is scheduled next time around for 4/22-27/06. The NAB wants speakers and is seeking proposals, especially on technical matters. John Marino, NAB VP, Science and Technology explains, "The NAB Show is home to everyone interested in the latest digital media technologies and how these technologies will impact future business strategies. We welcome high-level speakers who are visionaries with a track record of leadership and who are willing to share their experiences with our attendees."

WNCX-FM Cleveland adds HD Radio

The Cleveland Radio landscape has evolved again as Infinity Broadcasting announced the launch of HD Radio technology at their second Cleveland station, WNCX, Cleveland's Classic Rock. According to Tom Herschel, VP/GM of WNCX, "With HD Radio on WNCX as well as their brother-station WXTM, Clevelanders have access to the best in rock music through cutting edge technology. The best part of this advance is that it's free, over-the-air, with no monthly subscription cost".

CBS is oldest, but NBC catching up

The magic demo for most TV pros is 18-49. It will therefore not likely be taken as good news that the audience for NBC is aging. In fact, it has gone from 46 for the 2003-2004 season to 48 during 2004-2005. However, CBS remains the oldest, at 51.8 - - that's down from 53. The median ages are from a Magna Global report, published by AdAge.com. Following CBS's 51.8 median and NBC's 48 median are ABC (45.3), Fox (38), WB (35) and UPN (32.9). Another AdAge.com item indicates that maybe this isn't such a bad thing after all. Noting that a significant portion of boomers are about to exit 18-49. The down side of 50+ is that average household expenditures on goods and services is about 10% lower than 18-49. However, children drive a lot of the spending, and with the kids off on their own - - as is the case with many in the 50+ zone, the remaining middle-aged household residents are free to spend like never before. And spend they do - - an average of 19K per person annually. AdAge also notes that people in the overlap demo - - 45-54 - - are generally at the peak of their earing power. All of this should be of particular interest to auto manufacturers. One expert says that the 50+ group is expected to drive automotive for the next 10-15 years.
