Arbitron releases RADAR 89 radio network ratings

Arbitron released its June 2006 RADAR radio network audience reports (RADAR 89) covering the period March 31, 2005-March 29, 2006. The sample size for RADAR 89 has been increased to more than 106,000 diarykeepers, up from 100,000 in RADAR 88. By the release of RADAR 92 in March 2007, the RADAR radio network service will be based on an annual sample size of 125,000 diarykeepers. | See the charts here |

Highlights:

While down slightly in RADAR 89 from RADAR 88, network radio returned to RADAR 87 levels.

Fairly stable with almost half of the networks' changes within three percentage points; only about one out of 10 of the networks even had double-digit changes.

The only major network change was Crystal Media Networks Prestige increased its inventory by over 40% (going from seven minutes per week to 10 minutes)

The three networks that experienced double-digit increases were newer RADAR networks (i.e., CMN Prestige and two Dial-Global nets). The three networks that experienced double-digit decreases were all Westwood nets.

Individual highlights:

ABC Radio Networks

Increased share

American Urban Radio Networks

Continues downward slide: eighth RADAR in row with decreased gross impressions (two years worth)

Crystal Media Network

Highest gross impressions in its RADAR history (function of increasing inventory)

Almost doubled its GIs share in RADAR 89 from RADAR 88

Dial-Global Radio Networks

Continues to grow - almost 50% more gross impressions than two years ago.

Nice +8% growth in this RADAR (GIs)

Dial-Global Complete FM maintains the No. 1 ranking among all networks for Adults 18-49. The network increased 18% from RADAR 85 and remains one of the most effective choices to reach young men and women. The Dial-Global News & Information Network, which debuted in RADAR 84, is also up more than 11 percent from one year ago among People 12+.

Jones MediaAmerica Radio Network

Decrease in this RADAR but +7% increase from a year ago

Premiere Radio Networks

Gross impressions down slightly but maintained share level

Up almost a third from year ago.

For total weekly reach in RADAR 89, Premiere reached 45% of all Persons 12+, 47% of all Adults 25-54, and 49% of all Adults 18-49. Additionally, 29.6% of Premiere's total weekly reach are exclusive listeners (33.1 million Persons 12+ listeners - unique audience not reached by any other network group).

Westwood One Radio Networks

Continues downward spiral: eighth RADAR in row with decreased GIs (high was RADAR 81)

RBR observation:
In the age of consolidation, it's worthy to note there are still entrepreneurial companies such as Dial-Global and Crystal Media Network that are putting out well-targeted product with significant GI increases. Dial Global's new Digital 24/7 network via the acquisition from Westwood One will be a new entry in upcoming RADAR reports. Given the same commitment the company gives to research and accountability with its current slate of nets, Digital 24/7 should be another success for them.
