Broadcast scores 96 out of 100 top programs

In the second week of the 2004-05 broadcast season, ended Sunday, Oct. 3, broadcast again topped ad-supported cable, according to a TVB analysis of Nielsen Media Research figures.

ABC's "Desperate Housewives" took the top spot with a 13.62 HH rating. ABC's "Monday Night Football" was No. 2 with a 13.02 HH rating, and CBS's "CSI: Miami" was No. 3 with a 12.96 HH rating. Fox News Channel's coverage of the presidential debate was ad-supported cable's highest-rated program of the week, delivering a 5.47 and coming in at No. 50; in fact, three of ad-supported cable's seven programs in this week's top 100 report were related to the debate. On the broadcast networks, presidential debates are considered a "sustaining program," or a program without advertising support, and ratings are not reported.

In primetime, broadcast delivered 33.61 HH ratings points over ad-supported cable's 31.91 HH rating points; when cable's rating is adjusted to eliminate ADS homes, ad-supported cable's delivery drops to 24.76. In the A25-54 and A18-49 demos, the differences were even wider.

Weekly Broadcast vs. Cable Primetime Ratings: Households

In the second week of the broadcast season, which ended Sunday, October 3rd, broadcast delivered 33.61 HH rating points in primetime, while ad-supported cable delivered an aggregate 31.91 HH rating; when this rating is adjusted to eliminate ADS homes (as of September 2004, ADS accounts for 22.4% of Cable + ADS homes nationally), ad-supported cable's delivery drops to 24.76.

CBS finished in first place with an 8.12 HH rating; ABC followed with a 7.14 HH rating and NBC delivered a 6.75 HH rating.

TVB's research was conducted on a level playing field, and included all of broadcast television - including the newer network affiliates, Hispanic network affiliates and independent stations - and all of ad-supported cable.
