Facebook to release iPad app

Sometimes getting things ready for the iPad takes time. In Facebook’s case it has already been more than a year. In fact, FB’s web interface isn’t optimized for the iPad or any other touchscreen device. Meanwhile, FB had its app for the iPhone ready to roll right when Apple’s App Store opened 2008. In the interim, a number of outside developers have introduced Facebook-friendly apps for the iPad (i.e. My Pad, iFace and Friendly).

That’s about to change, says The NY Times. People briefed on Facebook’s plans say in coming weeks the company plans to introduce a free iPad app that’s been carefully designed and optimized for the tablet.

The app has gone through several design iterations, and is now in the final stages of testing. Mark Zuckerberg, FB founder and CEO, has been very involved in the process, overseeing design decisions and the app’s unique features.

Developers have also overhauled the Facebook Chat and Facebook Groups features for the app. It’ll also go beyond the features available on the FB website by allowing users to shoot and upload hi-res photos and videos directly from the iPad’s built-in cameras.
