FCC approves WLZL-FM move to DC

El-ZolCBS Radio’s Spanish Tropical El Zol WLZL-FM 107.9 Annapolis, MD has been granted a city of license change to College Park, MD, which will take it out of the Baltimore market and put it into DC. As you can see by the map, no tower move will be necessary, as the city grade contour covers College Park quite well.

In early March, CBS Radio’s all-news WNEW-FM (99.1) DC repositioned itself 3/3 as a Maryland station focused on Baltimore, Annapolis, MD and Washington. WNEW, which switched from Spanish WLZL-FM “El Zol” over two years ago, has suffered in DC radio ratings—partly because its signal is well northeast of DC in Bowie, MD and it has been up against Hubbard’s top-rated WTOP-FM DC, which is a full-market signal and also has two other regional FMs on 107.7 in Northern VA and on 103.9 in Frederick, MD.

In 2012 when CBS Radio closed on the 107.9 frequency from Family Stations (WFSI-FM), it was dubbed WLZL-FM/Hispanic, opening co-owned 99.1 to a new entrant into the News format, WNEW-FM. It changed WNEW’s city of license from Annapolis to Bowie, MD to buy 107.9.

WFSI was sold to CBS Radio in a cash deal worth $8.5M. It was filed with the FCC 11/17/11.
