Now Confirmed: The FCC’s First 5G Spectrum Auctions

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Auction 1000, the FCC’s incentive auction designed to allow television broadcast companies to relinquish their spectrum to wireless communications companies, was just the beginning.

The FCC at its August Open Meeting on Thursday morning moved forward with the application and bidding procedures for the upcoming Spectrum Frontiers auctions of Upper Microwave Flexible Use Service licenses in the 28 GHz (27.5-28.35 GHz) and 24 GHz (24.25-24.45, 24.75-25.25 GHz) bands.

Why is this of importance to broadcast media? The arrival of 5G will likely revolutionize how consumers enjoy both audio and video content, paving the way for — perhaps — the ultimate end of over-the-air broadcasting in the coming decades.
