FCC denies CBS Radio request for WAOK-AM power increase

The FCC has denied CBS Radio’s request to increase the daytime power of its WAOK-AM Atlanta (1380 kHz) signal from 5-kW to 50-kW. After a series of informal objections from co-channel WRAB-AM (Reed Broadcasting), Arab, AL (1-kW), and responses/engineering analyses from CBS Radio, the Commission sided with WRAB, citing that the power increase would overlap the .5 mV/m daytime groundwave contour of WRAB. WRAB claimed CBS Radio’s analyses were done under abnormally dry soil conditions and improperly analyzed with a dielectric constant of 7.

F.W. Hannell & Associates represented WRAB in the proceeding; Leventhal, Senter & Lerman represented CBS Radio.
