FCC extends EAS comment deadline

At the request of the National Association of Broadcasters, the FCC has added a modest two weeks to the comment and reply period on the topic of a review of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The original due date for comments was 3/1/10; it is now 3/15/10. FCC is particularly interested in developing national EAS testing procedures.

NAB said that if it has a little more time, it could offer a more complete body of information on the topic, particularly in view of the fact that the National Alliance of State Broadcasters Associations and NAB are holding the annual EAS National Summit in Washington, DC from 2/28/10 until 3/1/10. In fact, the FCC itself will be in attendance, pointed out NAB, along with representatives from FEMA, Capitol Hill and many broadcast companies.

The FCC agreed with NAB, noting in particular the very short duration of the extension. Along with a new commentary due date of 3/15/10, a new reply commentary due date of 4/13/10 has been established.
