FCC lets broadcasters do it their way

After toying with an idea of mandating how and when television broadcasters run PSAs on the DTV conversion, the FCC has indicated it will instead allow them to following looser NAB guidelines instead. According to reports, the FCC is allowing more flexibility in how the issue is presented, both in creative and in means used to get the word out. Local television operators will still be free to go with a stricter FCC set of guidelines.

TVBR/RBR observation: FCC is right to keep the industry unshackled. Broadcasters have no choice but to get this right. And there are numerous watchdogs out there that are keeping close tabs on progress. Anything the FCC can do to help is great, but it shouldn’t work at cross-purposes by slowing broadcasters down with red tape and a one-size-fits-all government mold.
