FCC offers in-home helping hand to consumers

The FCC is not just offering advice on how to get your home video rig ready for the DTV transition – it is signaling to consumers that wherever possible, it’s willing to make house calls. The FCC’s own hired contractors will be capable of 200K such visits, to help consumers trying to get antennae and converter boxes properly connected.

In addition, many markets will have similar services available from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps, along with firefighters through the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

Additionally, there are 500 walk-in centers scattered throughout the nation where hands on guidance is available.

Availability of services can be checked by calling 1-888CALL-FCC, or by visiting www.dtv.gov, where entry of a zip code or state will lead to information about help available locally, as well as info on any DTV events scheduled for the area.

RBR/TVBR observation: Most DMAs should have the elements of their 6/21/09 ground game in place by now. We don’t think it’ll be possible to overdo it — the more knowledgeable volunteers available to aide at risk consumers, the better.
