FCC’s Next Erasure: The AM Radio Duplication Rule?


“If it weren’t for COVID-19, the Top Gun sequel would be in theaters right now. Nonetheless, you can rest assured that we’ll all be mavericks in three weeks.”

Those words from FCC Chairman Ajit Pai open a blog post made Wednesday that provides a transparent, detailed look at what’s on the agenda for the Commission’s Open Meeting for August.

While his comment referred to the “main attraction” — repurposing C-Band spectrum for 5G — there’s two big “media modernization” rule changes up for debate. One involves the sharing of broadcast facilities in certain situations, a rule adopted during World War II. The other involves the radio duplication rule.
