FEC due for an overhaul?

The New York Times editorial board notes that the Obama administration is looking at changes to the increasingly dysfunctional Federal Election Commission. It has gotten to the point where electoral miscreants who have admitted wrongdoing, and in some cases paid their fines, have gotten off the hook as party-line votes undermine electoral law. NYT noted damage done to public financing by Obama’s own refusal to accept it. But it hopes that Obama is successful in his attempt to reform the FEC, making it a home for “independent regulators” rather than “party hacks.”

RBR/TVBR observation: Good luck. As the only agency where the minority party gets equal representation at the commissioner level, the FEC was designed at birth to be dysfunctional.
