Sarasota talker simulcast WSRQ-AM/FM is getting a new owner. “Florida Talk Radio, LLC.” A new management/ownership group, will be buying the stations, pending FCC approval. Susan Nilon and Lauren Rudd, partner at Day Hagan Asset Management — no strangers to local talk radio — announced the deal to acquire WSRQ Radio (106.9 FM and 1220AM), owned by Donald and Lisa Murphy. Florida Talk Radio was established by Rudd, Nilon, Jim Lampl and Kent Kirschner.
“One of Sarasota’s oldest and longest surviving radio station groups is shaking things up. Ushering in the modern era of media and advertising, the station group is welcoming a brand new leadership group in the re-launch of Sarasota Talk Radio,” Florida Talk Radio said in a release.
Today, WSRQ airs Don Imus, Neal Boortz, Dennis Miller and personal finance guru Clark Howard. The plan is to add more locals to the mix.
“For us, this is a tremendous opportunity for a variety of reasons. The all talk format delivers the most engaged audience on the airwaves to advertisers and will enable us to bring so much richness to our local community,” said Rudd.
Nilon and Rudd have a daily three hour program airing at another local AM, WTMY. Their show will soon make the move to the new station group. “What this means,” said Nilon, “is that now instead of just a three hour show, we have 24 hours each day with which to create a programming environment that will make a substantial contribution to the local community and still feature the best in national commentary and entertainment.”
The new leadership group will add local elements to their daily programming through interviews of local leaders, activists and elected officials. “We are right now putting together a new programming schedule that will immediately put us on the pulse of local news and events through Sarasota Talk Radio” says Nilon.
