Fox buying TV duopoly in Charlotte

FOXCapitol Broadcasting owns and operates CW WJZY and MNT WMYT in the Charlotte NC DMA, and has decided to sell them to New Corp.’s Fox Television Stations. A third party may have a profound interest in the deal – the owner of the local Fox affiliate.

That would be WCCB, owned by Bahakel Communications. According to, one of the two stations being acquired is likely to wind up with the Fox affiliated, making it an O&O, while leaving WCCB scrambling for a new source of programming.

Terms of the deal have not been announced. Fox has not had a presence in North Carolina since exiting the Greensboro/Winston-Salem DMA a few years ago.

Capitol’s James Goodmon stated, “We have enjoyed being a part of the dynamic Charlotte market for 25 years. We are sorry to leave but excited about the future of the stations under the ownership of Fox Television Stations.”

Added Fox’’s Jack Abernathy, “We are delighted to expand our portfolio of stations and return to North Carolina WJZY and WMYT are both well-run stations that  provide us with a unique opportunity in a growing top-25 market.”
