Friday, ‘Law & Order’ finished #2 while ‘Jay Leno’ paces even

Friday, 11/20/09, for NBC at 8 p.m. ET, “Law & Order” averaged a 1.5 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 7.5 million viewers overall.  In the time period, “Law & Order” finished #2 among the major networks in total viewers and adults 25-54 and #1 in men 25-54.  “Law & Order” improved on NBC’s average in this time period during the traditional 2008-09 season by 25% in 18-49 (1.5 vs. 1.2) and 70% in total viewers (7.522 million vs. 4.417 million).   
 
At 9 p.m. ET, “Dateline NBC” averaged a 1.5/5 in adults 18-49 and 7.6 million viewers overall.  In the time period, “Dateline NBC” ranked #2 among the major networks in total viewers.  From its first half-hour to its second, “Dateline” increased its rating by 14% in adults 18-49 (to a 1.6 from a 1.4), 22% in adults 18-34 (1.1 vs. 0.9) and 36% in women 18-34 (1.5 vs. 1.1).


From 10-11 p.m. ET, “The Jay Leno Show” averaged a 1.3/4 in adults 18-49, a 1.6/5 in adults 25-54 and 4.8 million viewers overall.  Competition in the time period included CBS’s “Numb3rs” and ABC’s “20/20.”  This is “Jay Leno’s” top Friday rating in 18-49 in four weeks and biggest overall Friday audience in three weeks.  In the time period, “Jay Leno” tied for #1 among the major networks in men 18-34 and finished within 0.2 of a rating point of first place in adults 18-34 and men 18-49.

Versus the prior Friday, “The Jay Leno Show” was up 8% in 18-49 rating (1.3 vs. 1.2), up 7% in 25-54 rating (1.6 vs. 1.5) and up  2% in total viewers (4.751 million vs. 4.650 mil).

In total viewers, this is the sixth consecutive “Jay Leno Show” to deliver an increase in total viewers versus its results of one week earlier (pending updates).  In adult 18-49 viewers, five telecasts in a row (each telecast for the November 16-20 week) have now delivered a week-to-week gain.

Comparisons with Jay Leno’s 2008-09 average at 11:35 p.m. ET on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” are: in adults 18-49, 1.3 vs. 1.4; adults 25-54, 1.6 vs. 1.8; and total viewers, 4.8 million vs. 5.1 million.  Comparisons with NBC’s Monday-through-Friday 10-11 p.m. ET non-sports average over the 52 weeks prior to Jay’s debut are: in adults 18-49, 1.3 vs. 2.2; adults 25-54, 1.6 vs. 2.7; and total viewers, 4.8 million vs. 6.9 million.

For the week of  November 16-20, “The Jay Leno Show” is up week-to-week by 6% in 18-49 viewers (2.027 million vs. 1.910 million) and up 3% in total viewers (4.954 million vs. 4.792 million) (pending updates, includes preliminary Friday results).
 
Pending updates, the average 2.027 million adults 18-49 for the week is the highest for “The Jay Leno Show” in four weeks (subject to change, includes preliminary Friday results).  The preliminary total-viewer average for the week (4.954 million) is Jay’s highest in three weeks.

In Late-Night Local People Meters Friday night:
Conan O’Brien (1.0/4 in 18-49 in local people meters) beat CBS’s LATE SHOW (0.7/3) in Nielsen’s 24 local markets with People Meters.

At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.6/3 in 18-49 in local people meters) topped CBS’s LATE LATE SHOW (0.4/2).
