FTC ordering reports from food companies marketing to children

The Federal Trade Commission is following up a study on how food is marketed to children that came out in 2008, hoping to guage how effective voluntary industry efforts to minimize marketing of sugary, salty or fatty products to children have been. It has now subpoenaed 48 companies to provide information to go in the next report.

The study was called “Marketing Food to Children and Adolescents:  A Review of Industry Expenditures, Activities, and Self-Regulation.” The FTC had earlier asked for public comment on the topic back in May, asking about “major food and beverage manufacturers, distributors, and marketers, as well as quick-service restaurant companies.”

According to a report at AdAge.com, 36 companies are being asked to participate for the second time, and 12 are new to the study. That means that eight companies were excused from participating a second time.
