He appeared in numerous movies and TV series, but Harry Morgan was best known as “Colonel Sherman Potter” on “M*A*S*H.” Morgan has died at 96.


Even before M*A*S*H Morgan was a favorite of TV viewers as “Officer Bill Gannon,” the loyal partner to “Sergeant Joe Friday” on “Dragnet.” He had numerous roles on other TV series, along with mostly supporting roles in many movies.

But Morgan said Col. Potter was his favorite role. “He was firm. He was a good officer and he had a good sense of humor. I think it’s the best part I ever had,” he said in an interview for the Archive of American Television. The video is below.

RBR-TVBR observation: Yes, he was a favorite actor of just about everyone. True M*A*S*H fans will recall that he first appeared on a single episode in 1974 as Major General Bartford Hamilton Steele, an officer not in control of his mental faculties. Morgan returned the next year as Colonel Potter and continued in the role until the series finale in February 1983, which drew a record 125 million viewers for CBS.
