Hispanic Radio Podcast: ‘Mega’ Success In Cradle of Liberty

0

The Delaware Valley, which includes the greater Philadelphia area, has seen tremendous growth in its U.S. Hispanic population since 1998, when Spanish-language programming arrived for the first time on a Class B AM with 1kw during daylight hours and 250 watts at night.

In summer 2006, a big FM took a stab at programming targeting Hispanics. By May 2007, the station switched formats, leaving what is today Mega Nation in the driver’s seat as the region’s leader for Hispanic programming. Translators in Vineland, a longtime Latino population center in South Jersey, and in Atlantic City, make what was once WEMG-AM a DMA-wide player.

How Mega Nation is a sales and ratings success — and how it recently went viral thanks to its Spanish-language play-by-play of Philadelphia Eagles NFL games — is the focal point of the latest Hispanic Radio Podcast, which sees RBR+TVBR Editor-in-Chief Adam R Jacobson chat with Mark Guralnick, VP and Regional Manager for “La Mega Nation.”

How did Guralnick get involved in Hispanic radio, and why is he still involved today?

What does the future hold for Hispanic media in Philadelphia, and this Medallas de Cortez Award finalist for Station of the Year?
