Hot goes Ol

Clear Channel Radio blew up “Hot 93.9” in Honolulu and launched a new “93.9 Jamz” format featuring a Generation X rhythmic playlist “with Hawaii influences.” The calls also changed, with KIKI moved to the former KHBZ-AM and the FM now carrying KHJZ-FM.

The new station is calling its format “Your generation’s ol’ skool.” The former “Hot 93.9” rhythmic top 40 format lives on, sort of, on the HD2 channel of the 93.3 MHz signal.

“We’re excited to unveil a new era for 93.9 today. Radio listeners in Hawaii now have a new choice on the airwaves, something unlike any other station they’ve heard in the market,” said Chuck Cotton, VP and General Manager for Clear Channel Radio Hawaii.

“It’s a new format featuring the ol’ skool music Generation X grew up with and certainly not their mom’s old school tunes,” said Jamie Hyatt, Director of Programming for Clear Channel Radio Hawaii. “The station name of 93.9 Jamz is a reference to the way listeners in Hawaii refer to their favorite songs from back in the day.”

RBR-TVBR observation: Uh-oh. If Generation X is now getting an Oldies format, it must be time for us to check out those assisted living brochures.
