Hulu strikes a deal for Univision programming

Even as the quiet auction of Hulu goes on, the company is adding content. It announced a multi-year agreement with Univision Communications.

Univision said the deal will bring hundreds of hours of top-rated Spanish-language novelas, variety shows, comedies, and reality series from the Univision family of networks to Hulu and Hulu Plus.

The Univision content will launch later this year on Hulu, including current season primetime programming from the Univision Network.

“Univision is committed to making the programs Hispanic Americans love accessible anytime and anywhere. The demand for Univision’s content is tremendous and this will be the first time our most popular programming will be available on the Internet,” said Tonia O’Connor, president, Distribution Sales & Marketing, Univision Communications Inc. “We are pleased to enter into this landmark agreement with a partner that shares our passion for super-serving all TV fans with their favorite shows in a rich and user-friendly environment.”

“We’re really excited about working with Univision to serve the broad Hispanic audience in the US, enabling our advertisers to connect with a young, very fast growing part of the population who haven’t yet been able to access a substantial offering of culturally relevant premium Spanish language content online,” said Andy Forssell, SVP of Content Acquisition for Hulu.

As part of this agreement, Hulu users will have next-day access to a selection of current season programming, while Hulu Plus subscribers will have much deeper access to current primetime episodes as well as hundreds of hours of library content. Hulu Plus subscribers will also have access to all the content available on the free Hulu service through any Hulu Plus enabled device.

RBR-TVBR observation: Univision was slow in getting content to the Internet because of a legal battle with its main program provider, Mexico’s Groupo Televisa, over who had the right to distribute Televisa content online in the United States. That was resolved a year ago when Televisa agreed to invest $1.2 billion into Univision.
