The Iowa Caucuses are on the calendar for Tuesday 1/3/12, and exactly a week before that, Donald Trump will moderate a debate between the Republican presidential candidates. Conservative news outlet Newsmax Media and ION Television Network will make the event available to interested citizens nationwide.

The event will run from 8:00-9:300 Eastern and will be held at the Hoyt Sherman Theater in Des Moines. It will be the last face-off for the candidates before the caucuses go into session.

ION will provide coverage of the event to television viewers, and Newsmax will carry it over the internet.

“All voters will keep an eye on this final debate before the first presidential primary of the 2012 election,” says Brandon Burgess, Chairman and CEO, ION Media Networks. “ION’s and Newsmax’s powerful combined audience reach, coupled with the prominence of Donald Trump as moderator, makes this one of the most influential meetings of the candidates to date.”

Added Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy , “The Newsmax ION Television 2012 Presidential Debate will offer all the major Republican candidates a forum to reach likely primary voters in all key states. There have been numerous debates so far, but we believe that the Newsmax ION Television 2012 Presidential Debate will provide a unique opportunity for the concerns of likely primary voters to be voiced on a national stage.”

RBR-TVBR observation: Trump famously flirted with the possibility of being a participant rather than moderator at this type of event, which puts a bit of an interesting spin on the proceeding. But what we’ll be tuning in for is this: To see if the moderator momentarily forgets what program he is on and fires one of the candidates.
