The General Sales Manager for Entercom Communications’ Houston station group has been promoted to the role of Senior VP and Market Manager for another cluster of radio stations owned and operated by the company with David Field at the helm.

It sees this longtime radio industry sales leader pack up and head to the Lone Star State’s capital.

Starting Jan. 27, Bob Mackay will be in command of Entercom/Austin, gaining oversight of oversight of KKMJ-FM “Majic 95.5,” KAMX-FM “Mix 94.7,” KJCE-AM “Talk Radio 1370” and KKMJ-HD3 “Hot 95.9.”

The role injects Mackay into a competitive battle with Sinclair Telecable, which runs the stations run previously in partnership with Emmis, and iHeartMedia, in addition to local players with popular niche formats and big NPR Member Stations KUT and KUTX.

Adult Contemporary KKMJ is one of Austin’s top-ranked stations. KAMX is a formidable Hot AC that’s home to the Booker, Alex & Sara morning show and syndicated host Orphan Andrew at night. With “throwbacks” and a music-heavy presentation, Hot 95.9 has a city-grade 99-watt translator and is gaining audience, according to Nielsen Audio listening trends for Austin.

Mackay reports to Entercom Regional President Brian Purdy. He said, “Bob has earned the trust and respect of his teams and clients alike and we are thrilled he is remaining at Entercom. As General Sales Manager he delivered outstanding results and we are excited for him to bring his energy and drive to Austin.”

Mackay added, “It can’t get much better than to be promoted in the best media company and continue to live in the great state of Texas.”

Mackay took over as GSM of Entercom/Houston in November 2017 following 3 1/2 years as GSM of KILT-FM “The Bull,” a role earned under CBS Radio ownership. He took the job in June 2016, while continuing his role as President of M&M Media in Sugar Land, a sales and marketing-focused consultancy.

Sales is Mackay’s strong suit, and from November 2006-April 2015 was Director of Sales for Radio One’s Houston stations. Before that, he was GSM Of Cox Media Group’s Houston stations.

From March 2000-December 2001, Mackay was VP and Director of National Sales for Emmis. Early career stints includes roles as a GSM at iHeart predecessor Clear Channel Radio and as Director of Sales for Trumper Communications, where he worked with such stations as KISN-FM in Salt Lake City.
