Matthews keeps his hat on

Meaning that MSNBC stalwart Chris Matthews is not throwing his hat in the ring, and will not challenge Arlen Specter (R-PA) for one of Pennsylvania’s US Senate seats in 2010. According to the Washington Post, Matthews is close to renewing his contract with MSNBC. There had been numerous calls for him to either commit to the Senate run and get off the air, or stay on the air and remain on the political sidelines.

RBR/TVBR observation: As we noted before, oppo researchers would have a field day with Matthews. Maybe he could have pulled it off. Witness Al Franken, who appears about to sneak into one of Minnesota’s seats. But the wily Specter would likely be a difficult opponent, even if Matthews made it through the Democratic primaries.
