McDowell expresses doubts about DTV transition

FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell fired off a letter the Chairman Kevin Martin expressing his concern that he and the other commissioners have been out of the loop on the DTV transition, and that key support facilities are not ready to go. His major concern is a lack of ability to handle citizen enquiries. “In short, it appears the Commission’s efforts to date are inadequate.” His concerns are not only about swamping call centers on DTV day, but for problems today. He said through his own personal experience, it is tough to get through right now – callers contend with busy signals, electronic menus, the inability to get through to a live human, and a lack of any staffing at all on weekends. He did not call for a deadline extension, but did strongly suggest that problems with responsiveness be remedied ASAP.
