Merlin Media launched Q87.7 sooner than the previously cited 5/7 date, bringing back the former Emmis call letters WKQX to Chicago. Q87.7 launched Sunday at 7:00p.m.

John Gehron, Chairman of The Merlin Advisory Board Q87.7 features a “melodic, mainstream Alternative music mix designed to attract Chicagoland’s young adult listeners. It concentrates heavily on music from the last 18 months by artists like Black Keys, Grouplove, Neon Trees, Mumford & Sons, Gotye and fun. Established core artists include Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Killers, Muse, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Smashing Pumpkins.”

Merlin entered into an LMA with Venture Technologies Group, LLC to program and sell advertising on WLFM-LP (87.7 MHz) effective 4/30. WIQI-FM’s FM News (101 MHz, Chicago) had been simulcast on 87.7FM until now. This marks the return of the Alternative format to Chicago’s airwaves. WKQX-LP is a LP TV station whose audio can be heard on 87.7 FM.

  1. Since the FCC has issued a drop dead date for analog LPTV stations in just a couple of years, this programming is either a test for movement to an FM station or on a downward death spiral rom day one.

  2. Its about time!!!! there are no other stations on the radio that play modern rock and alternative! Welcome back guys!
