MGM and Weigel to launch “This”

That’s right. This TV. Weigel Broadcasting has already been programming classic TV shows on two LPTV stations in Chicago and is now teaming with MGM to take classic TV shows and movies from the studio’s library nationwide as a new network for DTV multicasting. This TV is set to launch in October. Neal Sabin, who manages Weigel’s WCIU-TV Chicago and the two LPTVs, will head up the new net. Weigel will put This on DTV channels of its own stations in Chicago, Milwaukee and South Bend as it seeks affiliates elsewhere.

The new network will be competing with Retro Television Network (RTN), which got a head start, but has lately been dealing with the financial problems of its former owner, Equity Media Holdings. To raise cash, RTN was recently sold to Henry Luken, the largest shareholder of Equity. RTN recently lost its rights to old CBS programming and is now airing mostly programming from the NBC Universal library.
