Morgan Freeman new voice of CBS Evening News

Following the death of Walter Cronkite nearly six months ago, CBS News had quietly indicated that his voice intro for the “CBS Evening News with Katie Couric” would be phased out. That finally took place, with no fanfare, this week.

The new into, which debuted Monday evening, is voiced by actor Morgan Freeman. For one thing, CBS will now be able to have Freeman make new recordings when special events merit a special introduction.

It is hardly new to have an actor voice a network news into. Michael Douglas has been the voice introducing the “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” for over two years. A somewhat lesser known actor, Mike Rowe, who hosts “Dirty Jobs” on Discovery, has been the voice of ABC’s “World News with Diane Sawyer” since its debut last month.
