MSNBC reworks election anchoring duties

MSNBC is rebuilding the wall between punditry and journalism by pulling Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews out of the anchor chairs they occupied during the two political conventions. The cable network’s coverage of the upcoming debates and election night will instead by anchored by David Gregory, the veteran NBC News correspondent.

On-air political squabbling between Olbermann, Matthews and others made MSNBC the subject of numerous news commentaries, not to mention blogger posts. It also reportedly made the strained relationship between NBC News and MSNBC even more strained. Citing comments by the two MSNBC anchors, conservatives had accused all of NBC Universal’s news outlets of left-wing bias.

Olbermann and Matthews will continue to appear on MSNBC election coverage as analysts, but not as anchors.
