Multichannel ATSC 3.0 Encoder Arrives From Korea

DS Broadcast, a supplier of broadcast equipment to the Korean ATSC 3.0 broadcasting industry, today announced a new encoder capable of handling 12 channels simultaneously as well as statistical multiplexing functionality. The BGE9200 encoder responds to customer demand, based on expected trends in the U.S. market.

“With the upcoming rollout of ATSC 3.0 in a number of markets, we know from speaking to broadcasters in the U.S. that the focus will be on providing more channels in HD-quality and with High Dynamic Range than on purely offering Ultra HDTV signals,” said Chris Lee, Director of Marketing & Sales of DS Broadcast. “Our new multi-channel BGE9200 encoder will be a useful tool for those who broadcast a number of channels.”

In addition to multichannel encoding and statistical multiplexing, the BGE9200 includes a System-on-Chip (SoC) encoder. “The SoC encoder is ideal for maximum stability and outstanding picture quality,” Lee said. “Some encoders use software-based encoding rather than a more stable SoC solution like the new BGE9200.”

The new 12-channel Full HD encoder delivers the highest quality video using the HEVC (H.265) codec.

Other features include:

ATSC 3.0 (ROUTE / MMTP) or MPEG-2 TS Multiplex
Statistical Multiplexing for the best video quality
HDR, and Wide Color Gamut supported
HEVC main/main 10 encode at 50/59.94 frames per second
Immersive 3D audio encoder support: Dolby AC-4 encoding/pass-through, and MPEG-H 3D Audio
The BGE9200 also includes PTP and NTP support for wall clock synchronization, 12G-SDI/Quad 3G-SDI/3G-SDI/HD-SDI sources, robust 24/7 continuous operation, a 50,000 hour operational guarantee (meantime between failures), and comes in a 4U 19-inch rack mountable cabinet with a redundant power supply.

There’s also a newly released ATSC 1.0 Encoder that could be ideal for stations involved in the post-spectrum auction repack. DS Broadcast is also offering the BGE9100, an Advanced Encoder that supports MPEG-2 video, H.264, and HEVC (H.265) for use in the broadcast and transmission environment.

The BGE9100 offers multichannel encoding for up to four channels at the same time using HD or SD inputs as well as statistical multiplexing functionality.

Built with support for AC-3 audio encoding, this model also includes PTP and NPT support for wall clock synchronization (with an ATSC 3.0 encode mode.). It can accept 12G-SDI, Quad 3G-SDI, HD-SDI, or SDI sources and can reliably run on a 24/7 schedule. Like the BGE9200, it also offers a guaranteed 50,000 hours meantime between failures, is mountable in a standard 19 inch rack, and has a redundant power supply.

DS Broadcast is exhibiting at Booth SU#6907 at the Las Vegas Convention Center during this week’s NAB Show.
